My neighbor's weather station is the best forecast
Seeing data from a personal weather station three blocks away gives me more accurate local conditions than any national service. The crowd-sourced station network is Weather Underground's superpower.
Hyperlocal data is genuinely different
Temperature can vary 5+ degrees between my home and the airport where official stations are. Weather Underground's neighborhood-level data reflects my actual conditions. Accuracy through density.
Interface needs a modern refresh
The app looks like it was last redesigned in 2018. Functional but dated. The data is excellent but the presentation doesn't match competitors like CARROT or even Apple Weather.
Historical data is incredible
Looking up weather data for any location on any past date going back decades. For planning events, comparing years, or just curiosity, the historical archive is unmatched.
Since IBM bought it, quality declined
Weather Underground was better as an independent company. Under IBM/Weather Company ownership, ads increased, features stagnated, and the community feels neglected.
Perfect companion for my PWS
I own a personal weather station and Weather Underground is where I share my data. Seeing my station help neighbors get better forecasts is rewarding. The community aspect is special.
Ads are annoying but expected
Banner ads and occasional interstitials interrupt the experience. Not as bad as The Weather Channel app but still distracting. An ad-free option at a reasonable price would help.
Station map shows weather density
The map showing all nearby personal weather stations with their readings is fascinating. You can see temperature gradients across your city in real-time. Micro-climate visibility.
Forecast discussion is for weather nerds
The written forecast discussion explaining why conditions are expected is educational. Understanding the reasoning behind forecasts makes you a better weather interpreter.
Station quality varies wildly
Some personal weather stations are well-maintained and accurate. Others are in direct sunlight or broken. The crowd-sourced data is only as good as the stations providing it.
Best for weather enthusiasts
If you're a weather nerd who wants raw data, station comparisons, and historical trends, Weather Underground is the app. It's not for casual users but perfect for enthusiasts.
Push notifications are basic
Severe weather notifications work but the customization is limited compared to competitors. Can't set specific thresholds for temperature or wind speed alerts.
Webcam network is a nice touch
Live webcams from community members showing current conditions visually. Sometimes seeing actual weather through a local webcam is more useful than numbers on a screen.
Smart speaker integration exists
Weather Underground data on Alexa and Google Home. Asking your speaker for hyperlocal weather from the nearest station. The voice integration adds hands-free convenience.
Astronomy data for stargazers
Moon phases, sunrise/sunset, and astronomical data for clear sky planning. For amateur astronomers and stargazers, the astronomical data helps plan viewing sessions.
API is popular with developers
The Weather Underground API powers many third-party weather apps and integrations. The data accessibility for developers keeps the service relevant beyond the main app.
Air quality data included
Local air quality index and pollution data alongside weather. For people with respiratory conditions or in fire-prone areas, the AQI data is important health information.
Community forums are active
Weather discussion forums where enthusiasts share observations and predictions. The community engagement adds a social layer to weather that no other app offers.
Tide and marine data
Tide times, wave heights, and marine forecasts for coastal users. The maritime weather data is detailed enough for boat owners and coastal planners.
The weather community's app
Weather Underground is for people who care about weather beyond "should I bring a jacket." The community, station data, and depth of information serve serious weather followers well.
