Discover Weekly changed how I find music
Every Monday, Spotify serves me 30 songs I've never heard that I almost always love. The recommendation algorithm understands my taste better than I do. Discover Weekly is genuinely magical.
Best free tier in streaming
The free tier with ads is still the best free music option. Shuffle play on mobile, full on-demand on desktop. For budget-conscious listeners, Spotify Free is genuinely usable.
Still no lossless audio in 2026
Apple Music and Tidal offer lossless audio. Spotify promised HiFi years ago and never delivered. For audiophiles, the 320kbps ceiling is a real limitation. Where is Spotify HiFi?
Wrapped is cultural phenomenon
Spotify Wrapped has become an annual cultural event. Sharing your top songs, artists, and listening stats is fun social currency. No other music app has created this kind of engagement.
Podcast integration is well done
Having music and podcasts in one app is convenient. The podcast player has improved with chapters, episode queuing, and sleep timer. One subscription for all audio content.
UI changes every update
The home screen, library, and now playing screen keep getting redesigned. Let me learn the app before changing it again. The constant redesigns are disorienting and unnecessary.
Collaborative playlists are social
Creating shared playlists with friends where everyone adds songs is perfect for road trips, parties, and music discovery. The social playlist experience is something you can't get elsewhere.
Daily Mix playlists are perfect
Daily Mixes that blend familiar favorites with new discoveries based on my listening patterns are my default background music. Six personalized mixes updated daily. Effortless listening.
Artist payouts are embarrassingly low
Spotify pays $0.003-0.005 per stream. An artist needs 300,000 streams to earn $1,000. While convenient for listeners, the economic model is exploitative to the artists who make the music.
Offline download essential for travel
Downloading playlists and albums for offline listening is essential for flights, commutes, and areas without data. The offline mode works reliably and the download management is straightforward.
Connect to any speaker seamlessly
Spotify Connect plays music on any compatible device - smart speakers, TVs, car stereos - controlled from your phone. The multi-device ecosystem is the most seamless in streaming.
Price increases keep coming
From $10 to $11 to $12/month for Individual. Family and Duo plans increased too. Each increase pushes the value proposition closer to what Apple Music offers with lossless audio included.
Blend with friends is fun
Spotify Blend creates a shared playlist based on two users' music tastes. Seeing your taste match percentage and the blended playlist is fun and sometimes surprising. Great social feature.
Lyrics integration works well
Real-time synced lyrics for most songs. Following along with lyrics while listening enhances the experience and helps with learning songs. Clean implementation.
Smart shuffle is better than expected
Smart shuffle that adds recommended songs between your queue picks is actually good. It surfaces songs that fit the vibe without disrupting the flow. Enhanced listening without effort.
Missing some artists and albums
Occasional missing albums (usually due to licensing) and artists like Jay-Z (Tidal exclusive period) leave gaps. Most music is there but the gaps are noticeable when they affect your favorites.
Running tempo feature is clever
The podcast/music feature that matches songs to your running tempo helps maintain pace. Audio that adapts to your physical activity is a thoughtful niche feature.
Curated playlists for every mood
RapCaviar, Lorem, Jazz Vibes, Deep Focus, Chill Hits - Spotify's editorial playlists are genuinely well-curated. Human curation combined with data produces playlists I actually enjoy.
Family plan is good value
$16/month for 6 accounts, each with their own personalization. For families with multiple music listeners, the per-person cost of under $3 is excellent value.
The default music app for a reason
Spotify became the default music app because it does everything well - library, discovery, playlists, podcasts, social, and cross-platform. Not the best at any single thing but the best overall package.
