Still the go-to for my friend group
For daily casual messaging with close friends, nothing beats Snapchat. The snaps feel more personal than texts, streaks keep us connected, and the lenses make boring moments fun.
Discover is a dumpster fire
The Discover page is full of clickbait garbage - "You won't believe what happened!" with a shocked face thumbnail. The editorial content quality is embarrassingly low. I avoid it entirely.
AR lenses are genuinely impressive
The AR technology in Snapchat lenses is years ahead of competitors. Face morphing, world lenses, and the try-on features for shopping are technically impressive and fun to use.
My AI is unnecessary
The My AI chatbot feels forced into the app. It's pinned to the top of chat and can't be removed without Snapchat+. I didn't ask for an AI friend and don't want one taking up space.
Snap Map shows me what friends are up to
The Snap Map showing friends' locations and their recent stories on a map is unique and useful. "Oh, Sarah's downtown, let me text her to meet up." Spontaneous hangouts happen because of this.
Battery drain is significant
Snapchat running in the background uses noticeable battery. The camera always being ready, location for Snap Map, and notification checking all contribute. It's one of my top battery consumers.
Memories are a nice personal archive
Saved snaps in Memories create a personal time capsule. The "On This Day" memories that pop up from years ago are delightful. More authentic than Instagram memories because snaps are casual.
Snap+ not worth it
$4/month for Snapchat+ gives you... custom app icons, best friends order, and extended story rewatch. None of these features justify a subscription. It's the most unnecessary premium tier.
Best platform for casual authentic content
The ephemeral nature of snaps encourages authentic, unpolished sharing. No need for perfect photos or witty captions. Just a quick snap of your day. Social media as it should be.
UI is intentionally confusing
Navigation is still unintuitive after years. Swipe up, swipe right, tap here, hold there. New features appear in unexpected places. I feel like Snapchat was designed by aliens who observed but never used human interfaces.
Streaks keep friendships alive
Maintaining snap streaks with friends creates a daily touchpoint. It's gamified but it works - I communicate with friends daily that I might otherwise forget to text. Streaks are social glue.
Spotlight is a TikTok copy
Spotlight (Snapchat's TikTok clone) exists but the content isn't as good and the algorithm isn't as smart. I open Snapchat for messaging, not for content consumption.
Best for disappearing messages
For conversations you want to be truly private and temporary, Snapchat's disappearing messages provide peace of mind. Yes, screenshots can be taken, but at least you're notified.
Android version is still worse
Snapchat on Android has always been inferior - worse camera quality, slower performance, delayed features. In 2023, the gap has narrowed but iOS users still get the better experience.
Bitmoji integration is fun
Having your Bitmoji appear on the Snap Map, in chats, and in AR lenses adds personality. Creating your digital avatar and seeing it interact with friends' avatars is a small joy.
Stories were invented here
Snapchat invented the Stories format that Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and every other app copied. They get credit for innovation even if others executed it better.
Group snaps make group chats fun
Sending group snaps and having everyone respond with their own snaps creates a fun group dynamic. More visual and engaging than a group text. Our friend group prefers Snapchat for this.
Camera quality could be better
The in-app camera quality doesn't match the native camera app on most phones. Photos and videos look slightly worse when taken through Snapchat. A quality improvement would be welcome.
Cameo feature is hilarious
Putting your face on animated GIF scenarios and sending them in chat is genuinely hilarious. My friends and I use Cameos in almost every conversation. Best chat sticker feature of any app.
It is what it is
Snapchat has found its niche as a casual messaging app for younger people. It's not trying to be everything like Instagram. It's just a fun way to communicate with close friends. And that's fine.
