Good for beginners
Robinhood made investing accessible to me. The clean interface, fractional shares, and no commissions lowered every barrier. I've since moved to Fidelity for more features but Robinhood was my gateway.
Never forgot GameStop
When Robinhood restricted buying GME during the squeeze, they showed whose side they're on. I transferred everything to Fidelity that week. Trust is everything in finance and they broke it.
Good app, questionable company
The app itself is well-designed and easy to use. But payment for order flow, the GameStop fiasco, and gamification concerns make me uneasy about the company behind it.
Crypto and stocks in one app
Having Bitcoin, Ethereum, and my stock portfolio in one app is convenient. The crypto wallet feature lets me transfer to external wallets too. Nice to have everything consolidated.
Research tools are lacking
For anything beyond basic stock info, you need external resources. No screener, limited fundamental data, no analyst reports. Robinhood is for executing trades, not researching them.
Gold membership has good perks
Robinhood Gold at $5/month gives you margin, larger instant deposits, professional research (Morningstar), and a higher APY on uninvested cash. Actually decent value for active traders.
Customer support is nonexistent
When I had an issue with a transfer, getting help was nearly impossible. No phone number, chat was a bot, email took a week to respond. For a company holding my money, this is unacceptable.
IRA with match is compelling
Robinhood's IRA with a 1% match on contributions is a unique offering. Free money for retirement investing. This feature might keep me using Robinhood despite other concerns.
Options trading is too easy
Making options trading this accessible and gamified is concerning. I've seen friends lose thousands because the app made it seem like a game. Powerful tools need appropriate guardrails.
Cash card is a nice addition
The debit card that rounds up purchases and invests the change is a clever way to passively invest. Plus you earn on uninvested cash. The financial ecosystem is expanding nicely.
Tax documents were a mess
My first tax season with Robinhood was confusing. Multiple corrected 1099s, delayed documents, and unclear cost basis reporting. This needs to be better for a financial platform.
Clean UI makes daily checking addictive
The portfolio screen with the line graph going up (hopefully) is satisfying to check. The UI is so clean that I find myself opening the app multiple times a day. Maybe too engaging.
Limited to US markets
No international stock exchanges, no ADRs beyond the popular ones, no forex. If you want a global investing platform, Robinhood isn't it. US stocks and crypto only.
Started investing with $50
Fractional shares meant I could buy pieces of Amazon and Tesla with just $50. Other brokers had minimum investments that kept me out. Robinhood democratized investing for people like me.
PFOF makes me nervous
Payment for order flow means Robinhood sells my trades to market makers. I'm potentially getting worse execution prices to subsidize "free" trading. There's no free lunch in finance.
Recurring investments automate saving
Setting up weekly recurring investments into index fund ETFs automates dollar-cost averaging. $25/week into VTI happens automatically. Set it and forget it investing made easy.
Outages during volatile markets
Robinhood has a history of outages during the most critical trading moments. When the market is crashing and you can't access your account to sell, that's a serious problem.
IPO access is cool
Getting access to IPOs that were previously only available to institutional investors is a genuinely democratizing feature. I participated in two IPOs through Robinhood.
Growth over stability concerns me
Robinhood keeps adding features (crypto, retirement, credit card) rapidly. I'd prefer they perfect the core trading experience and customer support first. Depth over breadth.
Best app for learning to invest
The Learn section, earnings calendar, and simple news feed helped me understand investing basics. Combined with the low barrier to entry, Robinhood is genuinely good for investment education.
