For serious relationship seekers over 35
The user base skews older and more relationship-focused than Tinder or Hinge. If you're 40+ and looking for a partner, Match's demographic is actually an advantage.
Can't do anything without paying
You need a subscription to read messages, see who liked you, or basically do anything useful. The free experience is a tease to get you to pay $35+/month. Expensive even by dating standards.
Detailed profiles help compatibility
The questionnaires about values, lifestyle, and goals create detailed profiles that help match on substance. More information means better initial compatibility screening.
So many inactive profiles
Half the profiles I see haven't been active in months. Match keeps them visible to make the pool look larger. Messaging inactive users is a waste of time and subscription money.
Match Events are a nice touch
Organized singles events and activities in your city bridge online and in-person meeting. Speed dating, cooking classes, and hiking groups through the app. Novel approach.
Design feels stuck in 2015
The app interface feels dated compared to Hinge and Bumble. Navigation is clunky, the layout is dense, and it doesn't feel like a modern mobile app. Needs a UX overhaul.
AffirmMatch feature is interesting
The video profiles and personal affirmation features add personality. Seeing someone speak about themselves is more revealing than text alone. Good feature additions.
Guarantee is misleading
Match guarantees you'll find someone in 6 months or get 6 months free. The terms make it nearly impossible to qualify. Marketing that sounds good but delivers nothing.

Subscription auto-renews at full price and cancellation is deliberately difficult to find. Had to call to cancel. The retention tactics are aggressive and consumer-unfriendly.

My mom found her partner on Match after her divorce. For the older demographic who aren't on Tinder or Hinge, Match is where their peers are. Age-appropriate dating pool.
Bots exist here too
Paying $35/month doesn't eliminate fake profiles and bots. Getting scam messages on a premium service is extra insulting. Match should have better verification.
Profile boost helps visibility
The boost feature to increase profile visibility works but costs extra on top of the subscription. Paying for a subscription AND for visibility feels like double dipping.
Safety features are adequate
Photo verification, block and report, and safety tips for meeting in person. The safety features exist but aren't as robust as Bumble's. Meeting a baseline, not exceeding it.
Customer service is terrible
Tried to resolve a billing issue and spent 3 hours in chat and email. The customer support is outsourced and unhelpful. For a premium service, support should be premium too.
Success stories do exist
Match claims millions of relationships from the platform and I know several couples who met there. The sheer longevity means a large number of success stories.
Relic of early online dating
Match.com was revolutionary in 1995. In 2023 it feels like a relic charging premium prices. The dating app world moved on and Match is struggling to keep up with innovation.
