Used to be better
Honey used to find working coupons regularly but since PayPal acquired them the success rate has dropped. Maybe 1 in 10 checkout attempts actually finds a working code now.
Droplist is the real feature
The coupon finder is meh but the Droplist price tracking is genuinely useful. Set a target price and get notified when it drops. Saved me $150 on a monitor this way.
Rarely finds working codes
Tested on my last 20 purchases and Honey found exactly 2 working codes. And one of those saved me $0.50. The promise of "never miss a deal" is overstated.
Worth having installed
Even if it only works sometimes, its free and automatic. When it does find a code the savings are real. No effort required so why not have it.
Privacy tradeoff is real
Honey tracks your entire browsing and shopping history. After reading their privacy policy I realized the "free" tool isnt really free. Your data is the product.
Saved big on travel
Found a 15% off code for a hotel booking that saved me $80. That one find made up for months of no results. The potential savings make it worth keeping around.
Honey Gold is worthless
Takes forever to accumulate enough Honey Gold for a gift card. After 6 months of regular shopping I had enough for a $5 Amazon card. Not exactly life-changing rewards.
Some categories work better
Works best for fashion and food delivery codes. Electronics and travel rarely have working codes. Know which categories to expect results from.
PayPal integration is smooth
Since the PayPal acquisition, the integration between Honey deals and PayPal checkout is seamless. One ecosystem for payments and savings.
Hit or miss but mostly miss
On the rare occasion it finds a working code its great. But those occasions are getting rarer. The app still has potential but needs better code sourcing.
Amazon price history is useful
The price history chart on Amazon product pages is genuinely useful for knowing if a deal is actually a deal. This feature alone justifies having the extension.
Slows down checkout
Having Honey try 15 codes that dont work adds 2-3 minutes to every checkout. When it doesnt find anything (which is most of the time) its just wasted time.
Free is free
Cannot complain too much about a free tool. When it works, great. When it doesnt, I lost nothing. Just dont expect miracles and youll be fine.
Best during holiday sales
Honey works best during Black Friday and holiday sales when there are more active codes. Got 20% off several purchases during the holidays. Seasonal tool at best.
Concept is great, execution meh
Love the idea of automatically finding the best price. In practice it finds expired codes, codes that dont apply to your items, or nothing at all. Room for improvement.
Recommended retailers section helps
The section showing which retailers have active deals is useful for planning purchases. If I need something and a retailer has a deal, I shop there first.
Conflicts with other extensions
Honey conflicts with Rakuten and other cashback extensions. Cant use both at the same time. Had to choose between coupon finding and cashback. Annoying limitation.
Declining value over time
When I first installed Honey 3 years ago it found codes frequently. Now its rare. Either the coupons have dried up or the tool has gotten worse. Probably both.
Works well for pizza delivery
Oddly specific but Honey finds working codes for pizza delivery apps almost every time. Saved on Dominos and Pizza Hut regularly. My favorite use case.
Keep expectations low
Install it, forget about it, and occasionally be pleasantly surprised when it finds a working code. Thats the right mindset. Not a game changer but not useless either.
