Digital envelope budgeting works
Goodbudget digitizes the classic cash envelope system. Allocate money to envelopes (groceries, gas, dining out) and spend from them. When the envelope is empty, stop spending. Simple and effective.
Great for couples
My wife and I share the same Goodbudget account on different phones. We both see the same envelopes and balances in real-time. Spending decisions are transparent and coordinated.
No bank sync is a deal breaker for some
Goodbudget requires manual transaction entry - no bank connections. Some see this as a bug, I see it as intentional. You're more aware of spending when you enter it yourself. But it is more work.
Envelope method curbed our overspending
We used to overspend on dining out every month. With a $300 dining envelope, we literally can't overspend. When it's gone, we cook at home. We've saved $200/month since starting.
Free tier is too limited
Only 10 envelopes on the free plan is restrictive. You need at least 15-20 categories for a real budget. Feeling forced to upgrade for basic functionality isn't a great user experience.
Simplicity is the point
In a world of complex budgeting apps with bank sync, AI insights, and investment tracking, Goodbudget's simplicity is refreshing. Money in, allocate to envelopes, spend, track. Done.
Reports show spending patterns
The spending reports by envelope over time reveal patterns. Seeing that our grocery spending crept up by 30% over 6 months prompted us to meal plan more carefully.
Interface feels dated
The app works but the design looks like it hasn't been updated in years. Compared to YNAB or even Mint's interface, Goodbudget feels like stepping back in time visually.
Annual envelope fills are smart
Setting up annual envelopes for things like Christmas gifts, car insurance, and vacations means you save a little each month automatically. No financial surprises when those expenses hit.
Our family budget tool for 3 years
Entire family of 4 uses Goodbudget. The kids even understand the concept - when the "fun money" envelope is empty, that's it for the month. Teaching financial responsibility naturally.
Debt payoff tracking is basic
You can track debt envelopes but there's no debt payoff calculator, no snowball/avalanche comparison, no projected payoff dates. For serious debt payoff, you need additional tools.
CSV export for tax time
Being able to export all transactions to CSV makes tax preparation much easier. Filter by category, export, and hand it to your accountant. Practical feature.
Web version is useful
Having a web app alongside mobile means I can manage my budget from a computer when doing detailed planning. Not all budgeting apps offer a web version.
Subscription seems unnecessary
At $8/month for Plus, the pricing feels high for what's essentially a digital envelope system. More envelopes, more history, more accounts. The features are basic at that price point.
Changed our relationship with money
Before Goodbudget, money caused stress and arguments. Now we have clarity and agreement on priorities. The envelope system gave us a shared language for financial decisions.
Good for variable income
As a freelancer with variable income, the envelope system works well. When a payment comes in, I fill envelopes by priority. Bills first, then savings, then discretionary. Clear priorities.
No investment tracking
Goodbudget focuses purely on spending and budgeting. No investment accounts, no net worth tracking. You need a separate tool for a complete financial picture.
Community forums are helpful
The Goodbudget community forums have useful tips for setting up envelopes, handling tricky budgeting scenarios, and staying motivated. Nice to have peer support.
Wish for better visualizations
The data is there but the charts and graphs are basic. Interactive spending treemaps, envelope progress gauges, or trend sparklines would make the data more actionable and engaging.
Old school method, modern app
My grandmother used cash envelopes. Goodbudget is the same idea with smartphones. The method works because it's simple and tangible. Sometimes the old ways are the best ways.
