Old school but functional
FatSecret has been around forever and it shows. The interface is dated but the food database is surprisingly comprehensive. Free version is generous. Just dont expect any modern features.
Best free option maybe
For a completely free calorie tracker, FatSecret is hard to beat. No premium nagging, decent database, basic but functional. The UI needs a major overhaul though. Feels like using an app from 2015.
Underrated app
Everyone talks about MFP and Lose It but FatSecret quietly does a great job. The food diary is easy to use, the database is big, and its free. Not flashy but gets the job done.
Functional but ugly
Im sorry but this app looks terrible. Its functional and the database is good but the visual design is from another era. I know looks shouldnt matter but I spend time in this app daily and it matters.
Good database, bad everything else
The food database is solid and probably more accurate than MFP. But the interface, the user experience, the feature set - all behind the times. No AI, no photo scanning, basic charts. Just a database with a diary.
My go-to for 5 years
Been using FatSecret since 2019 and it works for me. I know the interface isnt modern but I know where everything is. The food diary is reliable and the database has everything I need. Not broke dont fix it.
Free is the main selling point
Honestly the only reason I use FatSecret is because its truly free without annoying premium upsells. The tracking is average, the interface is dated, but it costs nothing and works. Cant complain.
Needs modernization
FatSecret was great in its time but its falling behind in 2025. No AI features, dated interface, basic analytics. The free model is great but the product itself needs major investment. Still usable just not exciting.
Solid community features
The recipe sharing community on FatSecret is actually pretty active and helpful. Found some great recipes with accurate nutrition data. The social aspect keeps me coming back even though the app itself is basic.
Does the basics
If all you want is to log food and count calories, FatSecret works. It wont wow you with features or design but it wont frustrate you either. A perfectly mediocre but free option.
Free but feels free
You get what you pay for and FatSecret is free. The database is okay, the tracking is basic, and the design is outdated. But it works and doesnt cost anything so hard to complain too much.
Hidden gem
People overlook FatSecret but its genuinely good for basic tracking. The food diary is simple and effective. The database is accurate. No frills but no frustrations either. Been my daily driver for 3 years.
Wish they would update the UI
Every time FatSecret updates I hope for a UI refresh. Every time Im disappointed. The functionality is fine but the interface makes me feel like Im using an old Android phone. Please modernize.
Good for simple tracking
If you want bells and whistles look elsewhere. If you want a free, no-nonsense calorie counter that works, FatSecret is it. Ive lost 20 lbs using it. Nothing fancy, just consistent tracking.
Reliable but aging
FatSecret is the reliable old truck of calorie tracking. Gets the job done, not pretty, showing its age. The food database keeps it relevant but everything else needs updating. Still free though.
Actually quite good
Downloaded expecting the worst based on the screenshots. Actually pleasantly surprised by the food database quality and the straightforward tracking. Yes its ugly. But it works well and costs nothing.
Fine for budget conscious
If youre not willing to pay for premium apps, FatSecret is your best bet. Completely free with a decent database. Just set your expectations for the UI accordingly. Its not 2025 design quality.
Been around forever
FatSecret is like that restaurant thats been in your town for 30 years. Not trendy, not exciting, but the food (or in this case, food tracking) is solid. Serviceable if not inspiring.
Dont sleep on this app
Everyone recommends MFP but FatSecret is better in many ways. Free, fewer ads, more accurate database, and a helpful community. The only thing it lacks is a modern interface and advanced features.
Could be great with investment
The foundation is there - good database, simple tracking, free model. All FatSecret needs is a modern UI refresh and some AI features. Until then its functional but forgettable.
