Flow is genuinely great
Deezer's Flow feature creates an endless personalized mix that adapts in real-time based on your likes/skips. Hit play and let it go. The personalization is excellent and gets better over time.
Popular in Europe, niche elsewhere
In France and parts of Europe, Deezer is a major player. In the US and Asia, it's relatively unknown. The network effect matters for social features and industry support.
Songcatcher is better than Shazam integration
Deezer's built-in music identification (Songcatcher) works well and immediately adds identified songs to your library. No need for a separate Shazam app.
FLAC lossless is available
The HiFi tier at $15/month offers FLAC lossless quality. Quality is comparable to Tidal but the slightly higher price is harder to justify given Apple Music includes lossless for $11.
Lyrics on every song
Real-time synchronized lyrics are available for virtually every song in the catalog. The lyrics display is clean and accurate. Karaoke night sorted.
Free tier is heavily limited
The free tier has ads and shuffle-only on mobile, similar to Spotify Free but with fewer features. Not competitive enough to attract users from Spotify's established free tier.
Channel mixes for genre diving
Curated channel mixes for specific genres, moods, and activities are well-organized. The editorial curation for genre channels is thoughtful and helps discover music within specific niches.
Library could be bigger
While major artists are well-represented, niche genres and indie artists sometimes have gaps compared to Spotify or Apple Music. The catalog is good but not the largest.
Car integration works well
Deezer works with Android Auto and CarPlay seamlessly. The interface simplifies for driving and voice commands work for song requests. Good automotive experience.
Transfer playlists from Spotify
Deezer offers playlist import from Spotify, making switching easier. Most songs transfer correctly. The migration tool lowers the switching barrier significantly.
Podcast support is minimal
Podcasts exist on Deezer but the selection and player features are basic compared to Spotify. If podcasts are important to you, Deezer isn't the primary choice.
MP3 upload for personal library
Uploading your own MP3 files and integrating them into your Deezer library means personal music sits alongside streaming content. Useful for exclusive or rare tracks.
Social features are basic
Friend activity and playlist sharing exist but the social layer is thin. Without a large user base among your friends, the social features feel empty.
Equalizer built in
The built-in audio equalizer lets you adjust bass, treble, and mid frequencies. Not all streaming apps include this and for headphone optimization, it makes a difference.
Not enough reason to switch
Deezer is a competent streaming service but doesn't offer a compelling reason to switch from Spotify or Apple Music. Flow is great but not enough alone to justify changing ecosystems.
Mood and activity playlists
Playlists organized by mood (chill, energetic, focus) and activity (workout, cooking, studying) make finding the right background music intuitive. The categorization is well-thought-out.
Student plan available
The student plan at half price makes Deezer competitive for younger users. If your university is eligible, the discount makes the premium experience affordable.
Artist pages with tour dates
Artist pages showing upcoming concerts and tour dates are useful for fans. Direct links to ticket purchases from the artist page create a convenient discovery-to-attendance pipeline.
Deezer needs a differentiator
In a market with Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music, Deezer needs a clear reason to exist. Flow is good, HiFi is available elsewhere, and the catalog isn't the biggest.
If you're in France, it's the default
In France where Deezer is headquartered, it's a cultural institution. Strong local content curation, French artist partnerships, and cultural relevance that global platforms lack locally.
