The anime platform
If you watch anime, Crunchyroll is non-negotiable. The largest simulcast library means watching new episodes hours after Japan. Essential for anime fans.
Funimation merger was rough
The merger with Funimation brought more content but also brought bugs and lost watch history. The transition was poorly handled. Getting better slowly.
App crashes constantly
The app crashes mid-episode at least once per viewing session. Lose my place, have to reload, buffering issues. The technical quality is embarrassing.
Manga addition is great value
Adding manga reading to the premium subscription is excellent value. Watch the anime then read the manga source material all in one app.
Free tier is unwatchable
The free tier has so many ads its basically unwatchable. 5 ad breaks per 24 minute episode with 3 ads each. Pay for premium or dont bother.
Simulcast is why I pay
New episodes of ongoing anime available within hours of Japanese broadcast. No more waiting for fan subs or months for official releases. Worth every penny.
Subtitle quality is excellent
The official subtitles are well-translated and timed perfectly. Better than fan subs in most cases. Professional localization makes a difference.
Video quality fluctuates
Sometimes streams in crisp 1080p, sometimes drops to what looks like 480p on the same connection. The adaptive streaming is too aggressive in downgrading.
Dubbing has improved massively
The English dubs have gotten so much better. Professional voice actors who care about the craft. Dub quality has improved significantly over the years.
Search and discovery is poor
Finding new anime to watch beyond the popular ones is difficult. The recommendation engine is basic and the genre browsing could be much better.
One stop anime shop
With the Funimation merger, almost all anime is now in one place. No more checking multiple services. The consolidation is convenient despite the bumps.
Offline viewing is buggy
Downloaded episodes sometimes dont play offline or expire too quickly. For anime fans on planes and trains, this needs to work reliably.
Classic anime library is deep
From Dragon Ball to Cowboy Bebop to Naruto - the classic anime catalog is deep. Every major series from the past 30 years is available.
Customer service is useless
Had billing issues and customer service was automated responses for weeks. When I finally reached a human they couldnt help. Frustrating support experience.
Community features are nice
The episode comments and community discussions add a social element. Discussing episodes with other fans enhances the viewing experience.
Not all anime is here
Some anime is exclusive to Netflix, Disney+, or other platforms. Crunchyroll is the biggest but not the only place to find anime anymore.
Seasonal anime tracking
The seasonal calendar showing all new anime by season helps plan what to watch. Great for keeping up with the seasonal anime cycle.
Price increased too fast
From $6.99 to $7.99 to $9.99 in just a couple years. The price increases feel too frequent. Content hasnt grown proportionally to the price.
Anime movie premieres
Getting theatrical anime movies on Crunchyroll shortly after theater release is great. No more hoping your local theater shows anime films.
Must-have with caveats
If you watch anime, Crunchyroll is essential despite its flaws. The content library makes it necessary. The app quality makes it frustrating. Both are true.
