Great concept, fading execution
BeReal's concept of one authentic photo per day was brilliant. But after 6 months, most of my friends stopped posting. The novelty wore off and the app doesn't offer enough to stay engaging.
Everyone posts late anyway
The whole point is posting when the notification hits. But everyone waits until they're doing something interesting and posts hours late. The authenticity concept is undermined by human nature.
Low pressure social media is needed
No likes, no follower counts, no public metrics. Just sharing a moment with friends. In a world of performance social media, BeReal's low-pressure approach is a welcome change.
Just another dead social app
Downloaded it when it was trending, used it for 3 months, all my friends stopped. It's sitting unused on my phone. The viral moment passed and there's nothing to bring users back.
Dual camera is clever
Capturing front and back camera simultaneously shows both your face and what you're looking at. This creates a more complete moment than a single photo. Clever design choice.
RealMojis are fun
Reacting to friends' BeReals with a selfie reaction (RealMoji) instead of a generic emoji is a fun touch. Seeing friends' facial reactions to your posts is more personal and entertaining.
What do you do besides post once?
Post once, look at friends' posts, maybe react. That's it. Daily engagement takes 2 minutes. There's no reason to open the app otherwise. The feature set is razor thin.
Best for close friend groups
BeReal works best when your close friends all use it. Seeing what your best friends are actually doing (usually something boring, which is the point) creates an intimate daily connection.
Added features feel desperate
Adding Reels-like features, chat, and profile customization feels like BeReal is abandoning its original concept to compete with Instagram. Stay true to the authenticity mission.
Memory collection is nice
Looking back at your BeReal history creates an authentic diary of daily life. Unlike curated Instagram posts, these are real moments. The memories feature is underappreciated.
Notifications at the worst times
BeReal always seems to notify me during meetings, while driving, or at 2am. The random timing is the concept but in practice, it often catches you at genuinely bad moments.
Makes you realize how boring life is
BeReal catches you at random moments: at your desk, on the couch, eating lunch. It turns out most of life is mundane. That's either refreshingly honest or depressingly boring depending on your view.
Niche app with niche appeal
BeReal appeals to people tired of social media performance culture. That's a real audience but not a massive one. It found its niche and should embrace it rather than chasing growth.
Gen Z loves the concept
Among college students, BeReal is still popular as a daily check-in with friends. The demographic is narrow but loyal. It's become a ritual for certain friend groups.
Anti-social media social media
BeReal is what happens when you design social media against every engagement-maximizing principle. No infinite scroll, no likes, no algorithm. It's an interesting experiment in restraint.
Monetization will ruin it
BeReal needs to make money eventually. When they add ads or paid features, the authentic, ad-free experience that defines the app will be compromised. The business model is the biggest threat.
Wish it existed 10 years ago
If BeReal launched before Instagram established the curated photo culture, it might have changed social media. Coming after years of Instagram conditioning makes the authentic approach harder to sustain.
International daily connection
My friend group spans 3 countries. BeReal gives us a daily glimpse into each other's lives without the effort of texting updates. It's passive intimacy with distant friends.
One feature does not make an app
A single daily photo is a feature, not a platform. BeReal needs more reasons for users to engage. The concept is great but the product needs expansion while staying true to its values.
Refreshing while it lasted
BeReal was a refreshing break from polished social media. For the few months my friend group was active, it was genuinely enjoyable. If it can reignite that energy, it has a future.
