Ads are everywhere
Full-screen ads, banner ads, video ads between screens. The free experience is basically an ad delivery platform that also shows weather. The advertising is overwhelming.
MinuteCast is actually useful
The minute-by-minute precipitation forecast for the next 2 hours is surprisingly accurate. Planning a walk or run based on MinuteCast has kept me dry multiple times.
RealFeel is marketing genius
RealFeel temperature accounting for wind, humidity, and sun is a branded version of "feels like" that every weather service offers. Good marketing, not unique technology.
Location tracking scandal was bad
AccuWeather was caught sending location data to a third party even when location permissions were denied. For a weather app, that privacy violation was a betrayal of user trust.
45-day forecast is optimistic at best
No weather service can accurately forecast 45 days out. The extended forecast is entertainment, not information. Beyond 7 days, take any forecast with heavy skepticism.
Severe weather alerts are timely
AccuWeather's severe weather notifications have been accurate and timely. Getting tornado and severe storm warnings with enough lead time matters. The alert system works well.
Interface is cluttered and busy
Weather data, ads, news articles, and sponsored content compete for screen space. Finding the actual weather information requires scrolling past distractions. Simplify the UI.
Premium removes ads but is pricey
Paying $4/month to remove ads from a weather app feels excessive when free alternatives exist. The premium version is clean but the pricing doesn't match the value.
Global coverage is comprehensive
AccuWeather has forecasts for virtually everywhere on Earth. For international travelers, having reliable weather data in remote locations is valuable. Coverage is a strength.
Weather news is unnecessary
I open a weather app for weather, not news articles about climate change or storm chasing videos. The content bloat makes the app feel like a weather-themed news platform.
Allergy and health forecasts
Pollen counts, UV index, and flu risk forecasts are useful for health-conscious users. The health-related weather data goes beyond basic temperature and precipitation.
Widget is ad-free at least
The home screen widget shows weather without ads, which is where I check most often. The widget design is clean. If only the app itself matched the widget's simplicity.
Battery drain from background tracking
The app uses noticeable battery for background location updates. A weather app shouldn't be in my top 5 battery consumers. The background activity is excessive.
Radar map is decent
The weather radar with precipitation overlay and storm tracking works well. Not as beautiful as Dark Sky's was but functional and detailed enough for weather watching.
Apple Watch complication is useful
Quick glance at the watch for current temperature and conditions. The AccuWeather complication on Apple Watch is one of the most practical watch face additions.
Notification spam for weather articles
Push notifications for weather news articles I didn't ask for. I want precipitation alerts, not articles about hurricanes in other states. The notification abuse is annoying.
Hourly forecast is helpful for planning
The hour-by-hour breakdown with temperature, precipitation chance, and wind helps plan outdoor activities. The hourly view is the most useful part of the app.
Been around forever for a reason
AccuWeather has decades of forecasting data and experience. The long history means generally reliable forecasts even if the app experience has gotten worse with ad bloat.
Lifestyle forecasts are a nice touch
Running, skiing, golf, and outdoor event forecasts tailored to specific activities. The activity-specific recommendations go beyond generic weather data.
Reliable but bloated
The weather data is solid and forecasts are generally accurate. But the app itself is overloaded with ads, content, and features nobody asked for. Simplicity would improve everything.
